Keeping the Stories Behind Family Jewellery

Jewellery can remind a family of a person or occasion. Record a little of that context while someone can still tell the story.

Start with one piece

Ask someone familiar with it about their first memory, its wearer and a memorable occasion. Record their name and the discussion date with their permission.

Label recollections clearly

Distinguish someone’s memory from information in receipts or dated photographs. Mark anything uncertain. A story alone does not establish an item’s purity, authenticity, value or ownership.

Keep the record private where needed

Photograph the piece without showing where it is stored or exposing personal details. Choose searchable filenames, retain a backup and agree who can view it. Seek permission before sharing relatives’ photographs or words.

Build the record gradually without filling gaps with guesses.
