A name, date or short message can be an idea for personalising jewellery. Before arranging gold jewellery engraving, have the piece inspected and ask whether your chosen service and design are available.
1. Provide the final text in writing
Send clearly written text rather than relying only on spoken instructions. Check names, dates, punctuation, capitals and spaces. Choose an unambiguous date format and keep the version you both approve.
2. Discuss suitability and placement
Ask the jeweller to assess the area intended for engraving. Clarify the position, reading direction and available character limit for that particular piece. Point out existing patterns or lettering you want preserved and ask about the options.
3. Agree on a design example and the work
If available, request a typeface example or placement sketch. Establish whether it is an illustration or represents the intended size. Agree on estimated cost, completion time and the deadline for text changes. Ask to be contacted if the plan needs to change.
4. Compare the result with your approval
At collection, read the engraving with the assistant and compare it with the final text. Check placement and direction, and ask about any difference from the agreement. Keep the receipt or work record with your jewellery documents.
Confirm engraving availability directly with your chosen shop or craftsperson. Proceed once the piece has been inspected and the order details are clear.
